A Screenwriter's Spec Scripts
Tomás is a 12-year-old boy who undergoes a traumatic experience but is able not only to survive but to take charge of the situation – he’s not a victim, but a deep and rich character to whom audiences respond. We root for Tomás, and hold our breath as, step by step, he bravely takes the actions he needs to save himself and his siblings from a hellish situation. As we do in Greek tragedy, we feel for him, and fear for him: but this is ultimately not a tragedy, and finally we are able to cheer with him. The screenplay is full of action, but it is driven by character: audiences must love Tomás in order to care – and they do.
The Muse
Apsara, my first screenplay, depends on a strong, riveting character: Apsara herself – who is deeply human and has emotions that audiences respond to, even as she embodies aspects of mythological figures. In fact, she humanizes the mythological, so that audiences are able to respond to it fully, rather than as just some ancient story – it updates a deep, profound story and re-energizes it for modern viewers.
Mekada
Queen of Sheba
“All they from Sheba shall come, they shall bring gold and incense”
Makeda, a Kenyan aka Ethiopian, hypnotizes the audiences in an audacious and cunning persona as she bargains and forces herself out from a polygamous marriage and corrupted country and as an unwavering outsider, escalades in the land of opportunity.
